Masonry & Hardscaping Contractor

Masonry & Hardscaping inChatham, MA

Chatham sits at the elbow of the Cape and takes weather from three directions. Wind, salt and, along the shoreline, active erosion. Masonry here is not decoration. It has to hold.

Engineered, not stacked

Retaining walls that hold ground

A retaining wall is a structure, not a decoration. It has to manage the weight of the soil behind it, the water moving through that soil, and the freeze-thaw cycle that lifts anything set on a poor base.

That means a compacted footing below frost depth, free-draining backfill, a drainage pipe that actually daylights somewhere, and geogrid reinforcement once the height calls for it. Skip any one of those and the wall leans within a few winters. Most failed walls we are asked to replace failed for drainage, not for stone.

In Massachusetts, walls above four feet generally require a design by a registered engineer, and surcharge loads can lower that threshold. We tell you upfront if your project crosses that line, rather than discovering it mid-build.

Salt, wind and exposure

Built for a coastal site

Salt air breaks down mortar faster than inland weather does, and it causes spalling in brick and in some natural stone. On exposed Chatham sites we adjust the mortar mix and the material selection to suit, and we will tell you honestly when a stone you like is a poor fit for where you want it.

Chatham homes are also finished to a high standard, and the masonry is expected to match. Tighter joints, better stone, and details that survive close inspection.

Before we quote

Permitting near the water

A large share of Chatham work sits near a coastal bank, a wetland or a tight septic setback, which puts it under Conservation Commission review. Height thresholds, setbacks and erosion control all change what can be built and where.

We check what applies to your address before quoting, not after. A quote that ignores permitting is not a quote, it is a surprise.

Have questions?

Common questions in Chatham

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Chatham?

Usually yes once the wall passes a certain height, and almost always if the work sits near a coastal bank, wetland or septic system. Chatham Conservation Commission reviews a great deal of shoreline work. We check your address before quoting.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always drainage. Water builds pressure behind a wall that cannot drain, and the wall moves. A proper wall has free-draining backfill and a drain line that exits somewhere useful. It is the part you cannot see and the part that decides whether the wall lasts.

Does salt air really affect masonry?

Yes. Salt accelerates the breakdown of mortar and causes spalling in brick and some natural stone. Near the water we adjust the mortar mix and the material accordingly, and we will say so if a material you like is wrong for the location.

You are based in Mashpee. Do you come out this far?

Yes, we work the full Cape and quote Chatham the same as anywhere else. What we will not do is take a job we cannot service properly afterwards, so we are straight with you about scheduling before you commit.
