Masonry & Hardscaping Contractor
Masonry & Hardscaping inDennis, MA
Dennis has more grade than most of the Cape. The land climbs from the Sound in the south toward Scargo Hill and drops again to the bay, and a great many properties sit on a slope between the house and the yard. That changes what a patio is.

Working with the slope
Stone stairways and terraced patios
When the ground between the back door and the lawn drops four or five feet, you have two options. Fight it with fill, or work with it. Terracing is almost always the better answer: two or three usable levels instead of one awkward slope, tied together by stone steps.
Steps are the part that has to be right. Rise and run even across every tread, no soft spots underfoot, treads pitched just enough to shed water without you feeling the slope. A stairway that is a quarter inch off on one tread is the one everybody trips on, every time.
Each level needs its own drainage. Water that leaves the upper terrace has to have somewhere to go that is not the wall below it.
Dennis Port and West Dennis
Built to take a full season
A large share of the south side is seasonal rental property, and rental hardscape lives a harder life than a private yard. More foot traffic, more furniture dragged across it, less forgiveness for a joint that opens or a paver that rocks.
For those properties we build heavier: tighter joint sand, stronger edge restraint, and material chosen for wear rather than for a photograph. And we schedule the work for autumn or early spring, so the crew is gone before the season starts and the space is ready when it does.
East Dennis and the bay side
Marsh, salt and setbacks
North of Route 6A the ground shifts. Marsh, tidal creeks and salt reaching the masonry. Work near a coastal bank or wetland falls under Conservation Commission review, and setbacks change what can be built and where.
We check what applies to your address before quoting. A price that ignores permitting is not a price, it is a surprise waiting to happen.

Have questions?
Common questions in Dennis
My yard slopes. Terrace it or fill it?
Almost always terrace. Filling a slope means importing a great deal of material, holding it back with a taller wall, and still ending up with one flat space. Terracing gives you two or three usable levels for similar money and looks like it belongs on the site.
How tall can a wall be before it needs an engineer?
In Massachusetts, walls above four feet generally require a design by a registered engineer, and a load above the wall lowers that threshold. On terraced walls the spacing between levels matters too. We tell you upfront if your project crosses that line.
Can you work around a rental season?
Yes, and for rental property we recommend it. Autumn and early spring are better for masonry anyway. Booking off-season holds your spot and means the crew is finished before your first guest arrives.
Do I need Conservation Commission approval?
Often on the bay side. Work near marsh, a coastal bank or a tidal creek falls under wetlands jurisdiction. We check your address before quoting and handle the filing where it applies.
